In defence of physical media

Streaming is access; a disc is ownership. A manifesto for the right to keep the films we love — on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray or vinyl.

Every week a film disappears. It leaves one catalogue, enters another, and sometimes never comes back. The infinite library streaming promised is in practice a rotating shop window — and anyone who has hunted for an out-of-circulation title knows the size of the silence left behind.

Physical media answers that with an old, radical idea: ownership. The disc on the shelf does not depend on a licensing contract, a server or a subscription. It depends on you. That is the difference between visiting a film and living with it.

What a disc carries

A good physical edition is more than the film: it is an approved master, a commentary track, a making-of documentary, a booklet, cover art. VHS records how works circulated; LaserDisc invented the extra feature; DVD democratised the original-language version; Blu-ray and 4K UHD brought the living room closer to the projection booth.

Collecting is not nostalgia: it is domestic infrastructure for memory.

This is not about rejecting streaming, which remains a formidable door to discovery. It is about not handing it the only key. When a catalogue shrinks, the shelf at home does not shrink with it.

That is why this publication treats tapes, discs, books and posters as serious editorial subjects — with context, history and judgement. Defending physical media is defending the idea that film and television will still exist tomorrow, in the form they were made yesterday.
