The most awarded writer of American television’s golden age, Serling spent the whole of the 1950s fighting sponsors and censors — until he realised that fantasy could say what realism could not.
The Twilight Zone was born of that cunning: fables about racism, war, paranoia and conformity disguised as science fiction, introduced by the man himself in a dark suit with a cigarette in hand.
