A ferocious critic at Cahiers du Cinéma before becoming a founding filmmaker of the Nouvelle Vague, Truffaut argued for the “politique des auteurs” and then practised it in films of cutting tenderness, such as The 400 Blows.
His 1966 book of interviews with Alfred Hitchcock changed the standing of the English director — and taught generations how to read cinema.
