A painter who began filming moving canvases, Lynch made the American unconscious his territory: red curtains, electricity, highways at night and the horror behind the white picket fence.
With Twin Peaks he took auteur cinema into prime time and changed television for good; Mulholland Drive is routinely voted the great film of this century.
