Called the “master of suspense”, Hitchcock turned fear into a language: point of view, editing and information rationed out to the audience. Between silent-era England and studio-system Hollywood he directed more than fifty features.
Few filmmakers have been so studied — or so popular. His mature 1950s work, from Rear Window to Psycho, still shapes contemporary suspense on screens large and small.
